Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia Football Club will welcome Supersport United from South Africa on Sunday 8th in the first leg of the CAF Confederation's Cup scheduled to take place at Kenyatta stadium, Machakos from 3PM.
On Form K'Ogalo
Gor come into this match on terrific form, having only tasted defeat twice in the last 34 competitive fixtures with the losses coming against Esperance de Tunis in the CAF Champions league qualifier and the other dating back to 2017 when they lost against Mathare United.
In their Local scene, Gor are second on the log with 19 points after 7 matches with two games in hand, a point behind Mathare United who have 20 points having played 9 matches.
Supersport come into this match in poor form. In their last 20 competitive matches, they have only managed 3 wins. The side currently battles to stay afloat in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) as they are placed 14th, three points above the relegation zone with just 5 matches to go.They have only managed 27 points in 25 matches this season, a woeful rate of 1.1 points per match.
Gor Mahia were drawn against Supersport after being edged out of the CAF Champions league qualifier against Esperance de Tunis by a 1-0 aggregate score-line. Supersport fc on the other side defeated Angolan side Petro Atletico 2-1 also on aggregate.
However, Gor should not take chances even if they are favourites on this fixture. It hasn't been a norm for domestic league performance to reflect on such like Knockout matches. Furthermore, Supersport Fc come into this fixture as last year's finalists having lost to current champions TP Mazembe of the DR Congo.
Dollars For Grabs
Since its inception in 2004, the CAF Confederation Cup, officially named Total CAF Confederation Cup, is the second tier club football competition in the continent behind the CAF Champions League.
One of the factors that has made this tournament competitive in the recent years is the lucrative capital awarded from group stage qualification. For instance, clubs qualifying for the group stage and knock outs will be awarded $239000(Us Dollars), runners up take $432000 and winners $625000. Rough conversion to Kenyan shillings estimates it to approximately Ksh 27 million, Ksh 48 Million and Ksh 69 Million respectively.
Bearing in mind the Financial constraints many local teams face currently, it becomes a Money bag battle especially to a team like Gor, whose league doesn't have sponsorship. Fans have been urged to fill Kenyatta stadium, with gate charges going at 200/= for terraces and 500/= for VIPs.
