Gor Mahia duo of striker Francis Mustafa and defender Nzigiyamana Karim have on Thursday 11 October departed for Mali with the Burundian national team for their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the West African nation that is scheduled for Friday 12th at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako.
The duo will hope to get some playing time after featuring in the 1-1 draw against Gabon last time out. Karim clocked full minutes in the clash played in Libreville in September while Mustafa came off in the second half after being named in the starting line-up.
The game against Gabon also marked Sadio Berahino’s debut for the country of his birth and it was one to remember as he netted the game’s opening goal.
The point earned moved Burundi up to second place in Group C on the standings with four points from two games, only two adrift of leaders Mali and both teams will be keen to secure maximum points as the race for Cameroon 2019 intensifies.
Gabon, who lost to Mali on match day 1 are third in the Group and will play host to South Sudan, who lie bottom without a point, also on Friday.
Elsewhere in Group E, Libya, who will be without head coach Adel Amrouche after his abrupt resignation two days ago, will be away to three time African champions Nigeria at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
The North Africans head into the match as group leaders after securing four points from their opening two games, tied with South Africa but with a better goal difference while Nigeria are third with three points.
Nigeria lost 2-0 at home to South Africa on match day 1 before rallying against Seychelles last time out with an emphatic 3-0 away win.
