After a poor start to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, the Chipolopolo of Zambia will now move to joint top of the Group K after dispatching Guinea Bissau 2-1 on Wednesday 10- the tie being a match day three fixture of the qualifiers.
Goals from Justine Shonga and lanky defender Stoppila Sunzu ensured Zambia get to four points from three matches after failing to win in their opening two fixtures against Namibia and Mozambique.
17 minutes of play is all it took for the hosts to stake their claim in the tie with FC Metz defender Sunzu rising to head home from a corner kick. Zambia had earned a deserved lead after a lengthy spell of possession through the veteran from the 2012 AFCON winning side.
Though not having the best of seasons at his club Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier Soccer League, Justine Shonga would forget about his club troubles and double the hosts' lead just seven minutes after restart.
Frederic Mendy's goal in the 81st minute was all that the visitors Guinea Bissau could take from the match as it was then an inevitable victory for the Chipolopolo who will now hope that Saturday's other Group K clash pitting Mozambique and Namibia doesn't result in a win. This way, they'll be able to easily track the log leaders.
