Sony Sugar head coach Salim Babu is hoping that his crop of talented young players remain with the side for the foreseeable future as the team aims to build on the run that saw them finish third in the 2017 GOtv Shield competition.
The Awendo based side beat National Super League side (NSL) Vihiga United 2 - 1 in their third place playoff match on Friday 20 October at Moi International Sports Center (MISC) Kasarani, to finish third and pocket half a million shillings in prize money.
Youngster Benjamin Mosha, on his debut season with the club scored the winner 12 minutes from time, with a stunning strike from outside the area to leave Franklin Mwenda in the Vihiga goal with no chance.
Mosha was impressive throughout the match, particularly in the second half as the team fought back from a goal conceded in the first half, and coach Salim Babu was full of praise for the youngster and his team mate Amos Asembeka, a second half substitute whoi also played a crucial part in the game.
“I am pleased with how the boys played. We missed out on the final but it was a decent achievement considering how we have fared in the league. We played against a tough team that we might be facing next season in the top tier if God wills it.
“Mosha has been on form for us since he joined and I hope him and Asembeka together with a couple of the young players at the club will remain beyond this season. They are definitely in my plans,” Babu, a former Sony player said.
Mosha has scored once in the league this season for the millers while Asembeka is the club’s leading scorer with six goals. The team is on course to surpass last season’s 39 - point total, they currently lie 11th on the log with 35 points and next face Chemelil Sugar on Tuesday 24 October starting 1pm.
