Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side AFC Leopards urge to replicate its glory days in yesteryears in the continental scene came to abrupt end on Wednesday 21 at the Rabemananjara Stadium in Mahajanga, Madagascar; this coming after being held to a goalless draw by the country’s champions FOSA Juniors and a 1-1 aggregate in the CAF Confederation assignment.
Leopards went into the game with no option but to win in regular time or force a draw that exceeded two goals if they were to proceed to the first round of the competition; their first leg 1-1 draw against FOSA a fortnight ago in Bukhungu Stadium-Kakamega proving to be the difference in the preliminary tie. The outcome sending Ingwe out of the competition on the away goal rule.
In the home tie, Leopards had taken the lead through youngster Yusuf Mainge, who was on the bench on the second leg, in the fourth minute with Rado Mbolasoa restoring matters for the visitors at the quarter hour mark after some lazy defending from the home side.
In his bid to rescue the tie, coach Matano had made wholesome changes in the second leg with Dennis Sikhayi being drafted in for Mainge. Ezekiel Odera, Jaffery Owiti, Baker Lukooya.
