Gaspo FC beat Kilifi Queens 2-1 to bag the 2017 Edition of the Moving the Goalposts (MTG) annual tournament staged at the MTG Grounds in Kilifi on Wednesday 6 December.
The Division one Zone A champions made their intentons clear from the onset, as they piled pressure from the onset with attack after attack but Queens' backline stood tall. Mary Kinuthia would have opened the scoring for the Gatundu side six minutes into the match after firing in a thunderboult from yards out, but her shot veered off target.
It was the Under 20 National team midfielder Sheryl Agachi who put Gaspo in the lead in the 12th minute, after capitaling on a defensive blunder to lob the ball over an advancing Asiya Ali in the Kilifi Queens goal.
The visitors now enjoying most of the possession got another chance when Kinuthia freed Quinter Atieno with a well-timed penetrating pass, but Atieno's shot flew over the bar.
Winfred Achieng would have restored parity with five minutes left to the break, but her attempt to curl the ball past Brenda Achieng in the Gaspo goal was futile. A couple of missed chances from Dogo and Esther Dhiramo came just before the break in a half, but their efforts did not bear fruits.
In the second half, end to end attacks ensued with Elizabeth Wambui terrorising the Queens defense with her menacing runs but Dogo who had now switch to the centre-back position kept her in check.
A rather dominant Gaspo side kept pushing for a second and the pressure paid off in the hour mark, after Queenter Achieng ensured her name was in the scoresheet with ferociously struck ball that caught the Queens defense napping.
It was however Dogo who pulled one back for Kilifi side minutes later to keep Queens' hopes of staging a comeback alive. Achieng would have given Gaspo a comfortable lead but her numerous efforts were thwarted by Asiya who kept pulling save after save.
The match ended in Gaspo's favour.
