Following their defeat at the hands of Kenya’s Harambee Stars on Sunday 14 October, Ethiopia are now shifting focus on winning their remaining games starting with their home game against Ghana on match day five.

The loss, coupled with Sierra Leone's suspension, left Ethiopia with an uphill task and head coach Abraham Mebratu acknowledged the loss against Kenya was a massive setback.

He is however confident they will make it to the finals in Cameroon in 2019 despite having just two games remaining in the qualification process.

“The loss is a setback but this is not finished yet. We still have two games left starting with a home game against Ghana and away in Sierra Leone that we hope we are going to win. We haven't received any official communication from CAF saying Leone are out so we are still in the competition,” Mebratu said after the game.

On the game, the coach admitted his charges lost concentration at important moments, noting that the third goal killed the little remaining fighting spirit in his team.

Lack of Concentration

“The first two goals were due to lack of proper concentration from my boys just when we had started getting into the game. We tried to correct our mistakes in the second half but the third goal killed our confidence. We did not play well more so in the first half too and we couldn’t score with the chances we had but congratulations to Kenya for a good game,” the coach remarked.

Ethiopia will be up against Ghana next month with Kenya slated to take on Sierra Leone and should the ban on Leone stand, Stars is expected to only play a friendly tie in that FIFA window.
