Chemelil Sugar Football Club opens the 2018-19 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season with a trip to Nairobi where they take on Mathare United at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani on Saturday. With a season to forget now behind them, coach Francis Baraza's return at the club has everyone hoping for a positive start, especially after 12 new players were officially brought in.
One of the names is John Ochieng, initially in the books of Tusker FC but now finds himself at the sugar millers- himself hoping to turn his own fortunes around. Having not featured for the brewers once, the 19 year old believes Chemelil offers a fresher start.
''I guess I just wasn't lucky at Tusker, a team that mainly trusts tried and tested players. With coach Baraza here however, I believe I will get the right guidance and fulfill my potential,'' says the central midfielder who has featured for the side in pre-season friendly matches against Western Stima and Kakamega Homeboyz.
Though briefly laid out of week one plans due to a groin injury picked up against Kakamega Homeboyz in a pre-season match, Ochieng says he will be back in training as soon as Chemelil return from their Mathare fixture.
''I've been rested for four days. My injury was assessed on Wednesday in a test match and from it I was advised to take a brief break from training,'' adds the youngster who has previously been in the books of Kisumu Hot Stars.
''I just want to get playtime this season, that is the first priority of mine. The team also didn't do too well last year and it is upon us who are here now to help get a good start to the campaign. At the end of the season, I want to look back and say I did a good job,'' he concludes.
Chemelil, who finished the 2018 KPL season just two points above the drop zone, takes on the SlumBoys from 3 pm on Saturday. Here are the new inclusions to the team.
