High noon for Green Commandoes in NSL promotion race

Western Kenya soccer powerhouse Green Commandoes’ fate as far as promotion to the second tier National Super League is concerned could be sealed on Wednesday 15 November, the National Division One Zone B League enters the penultimate stage.

Green Commandoes are leading the race and in prime position for automatic promotion, having garnered 52 points from 23 matches. They head to their final match of the campaign on Wednesday, facing Lubinu Rangers in a clash they must win to actualize the target.

Timsales in pursuit

On Green Commandoes’ trail is Timsales, who have a game in hand and four points back. Timsales play host to relegation threatened APS Bomet on Wednesday, and this clash pitting the second placed side against second from bottom team at Michinda Boys High School holds crucial importance for both sides.

APS Bomet, on 18 points from 22 matches, are tied with bottom side Silibwet, and they need at least four points to guarantee survival. Timsales on the other hand, are assured of second spot but can rise to the top with two wins in their remaining two matches, provided Green Commandoes drop points in their game against Lubinu.

A slip up for Timsales in any of the two remaining matches will mean Green Commandoes finish top.

Zone B settled

The stakes are not as high in Zone B of the same league. Kangemi United have already secured their place at the summit of the log and are guaranteed of second tier football. Coast Stima are also assured of second place and are only awaiting the second placed team from Zone B for their playoff.

Down the log, the relegation race is also settled with Kengen Olkaria the confirmed side, having garnered finished their matches with 16 points, three behind Strathmore University who still have a game to play.

Promo/relegation criteria

The promotion criteria for the third tier sees the two top teams from either zone book places in the second tier then the two runners up face off in a playoff with the winner getting promoted to make it three the teams joining the second tier.

At the low end of the standings, the bottom teams from either zones get relegated.
