How Kenya voted in the CAF Awards

Egyptian forward Mohammed Salah scooped the 2018 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Footballer of the Year Award on Tuesday 8 January, after seeing off competition from his Liverpool compatriot Sadio Mane of Senegal and Arsenal's Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Salah got 351 of the total votes cast by CAF member federations' coaches and captains, with Kenya national team, Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne among the tacticians who picked the Egyptian as their first choice.

In his picks, Migne's fourth chaoice was Ugandan keeper Dennis Onyango, earning the Mamelodi Sundowns keeper two points, while Manchester City and Algerian Riyad Mahrez was his third choice, earning the forward three points, Senegalese forward Sadio Mane got four points from the French coach after being his second choice while Arsenal and Gabon forward Aubameyang, being the option, bagged only a point from Migne.

Stars captain Victor Wanyama did not participate in the voting exercise.

In the ladies category, Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma handed his first vote to eventual winner Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa with Francisca Ordega earning one point from Ouma as she was his fifth choice. Ouma gave three points to Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala and two points to South African Janine van Wyk with Cameroonian Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene earning four points from the Starlets coach.

There was no vote from the Harambee Starlets captain.

Team of the Year

Other categories that included young players of the year, Men’s Coach, Women’s coach, Men’s Team and Women’s team were solely selected by the CAF ExCo Members.

In the team of the year category, which had Kenya’s Harambee Stars up against Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Uganda, Mauritania and Zimbabwe, Stars only received four votes from the ExCo. Those who voted for Kenya were Belhassen Malouche, the Technical Director of Jordan FA-FIFA and CAF Instructor (1), Uganda’s FUFA CEO Watson Edgar (2 votes) and Algerian Korichi Toufique (1).
