After flirting with AFC Leopards in the June transfer window, Kenyan international midfielder Peter Pinches Opiyo has sealed a move to Qatar second division side Al Markhiya.
Opiyo, who has been a free agent since his two year deal with Finnish side FF Jaro expired in December 2015, was reported to be on his way to the 13 - time Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions in the June transfer window but he intentionally refused to put pen to paper.
Further reports indicated that the midfield maestro was angling for a return to Europe with the Scandinavian countries being bandied around as his likely destination. but speaking to Soka from his base in Doha; Opiyo confirmed that he had signed a one year deal at the Qatari club.
“We have agreed terms and I will be joining them on a one year deal. It is a good move for my career because I have stayed out of action for long. I have trained with the team for five days and I am impressed with the professionalism here. I hope to have a great season ahead,” Opiyo told Soka.
Pinches becomes the second Kenyan to play for Al Markhiya after Rama Salim who joined them in August 2013 before his stay was cut short due to gross misconduct.
Opiyo has previously featured for Thika United and Tusker in the local topflight where he won the league title in 2012. He was also part of the Harambee Stars squad that won the 2013 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.
