Mathare United face Kariobangi Sharks in week 26 of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) on a back of an eight match winless streak and according to their captain George Owino, they have no option but to win the duel.
Dubbed the Slum Derby with familiar faces having represented both teams, Owino believes both teams are on the same level with Sharks having only picked four points in their last five games; a streak he feels puts the same teams in the same level ahead of the faceoff.
“Both teams are having a poor run and this makes it an open game. There is no favourite but we are going to approach it as a must win to make our chances of finishing in the top four realistic. There is a small gap between us and the teams above. If we bounce back to winning ways we can easily rise to second place,” Owino is quoted by the club’s official portal.
The defender believes a win in the derby will be a big motivation for the boys and one that could boost their confidence heading into the league run in.

“Winning a derby is a big motivation because it improves your confidence and encourages you to win matches. We showed a lot of improvement in our last match and we want to build on that,” he added.
Mathare is yet to beat Sharks since they arrived in the KPL with the reverse fixture having ended in a 1-1 draw; Sharks doing a double over the Slum boys last season.
