Manchester United have finally pulle the plug on manager Jose Mourinho, sacking the Portuguese coach after a string of unconvincing results, with the 1 - 3 loss to Liverpool the final straw that convinced the club the coach is not the right man to lead the team.

The weekend loss to the league leaders left United 19 points below top spot in the Premier League and not even qualification to the second round of then UEFA Champions League would convince the Old Trafford leadership to keep faith with the manager, who has been with the Red Devils since 2016.

Poor run

United have managed just two wins in the last eight matches, those being against lowly Fulham in the league and Young Boys in the Champions League. A frosty relationship with senior players at the team didn't help matters for the coach though a hugely decorated tactician, his time with United has not been the most comfortable.

At Old Trafford, Mourinho has won the Europa League and League Cup (2016-17) and finished second in the Premier League last season and also reached the FA Cup final.

Since replacing Louis van Gaal, United’s spending stands at £364.3m on eight purchasing eight players.

Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, who has won each of the last three Champions League titles is available after stepping down at the Spanish giants and he has been linked with the United job.
