A sumptuous freekick from Tom Adwar in the 20th minute was all that Nakumatt FC needed to steal a march on Ushuru FC in the two sides first-leg encounter of the KPL/NSL promotion/relegation playoff played at the Camp Toyoyo grounds on Friday 19 October.

The result gives The Shoppers an advantage heading to the return leg encounter to be played a week from now on Sunday 28 at the MISC Kasarani.

Two halves

In a game of two halves, it was Nakumatt who took the advantage dominating play and carving out the opening half's best chances.

In one of those that yielded the goal, Joe Waithira who was a thorn in Ushuru's defence throughout the opening stanza and in bits in the second, earned a crucial freekick that Adwar stepped up and superbly dispatched.

Though they did not manage a goal, Ken Kenyatta's charges did have chances of their own, striking the woodwork twice through Oscar Mbugua and Evans Maliachi either side of halftime.

The loss rekindles the nightmares of last season's playoff that saw the Taxmen lose over two legs to Thika United.

They lost the first leg 2-1 before a 0-0 draw in the second finished them off. They will be hoping that it is not deja vu all over again.
