Ulinzi Stars FC head coach Benjamin Nyangweso has not found it hard settling back in the role after being confirmed following the club’s decision to part ways with Robert Matano, and as he sets targets for the season, he will be getting his charges to take on Muhoroni Youth in a Thursday 12 January pre season friendly match at the Afraha Stadium.
The team, scheduled to participate in the CAF Confederations Cup in 2017, resumed training a bit earlier than other Kenyan Premier League (KPL) teams and as he prepares his side for the clash he says a key factor he will be focusing on is the players’ fitness levels.
Playing against a team in the top flight, the coach is sure to gain, and he has termed it a perfect pre season game for his players, having returned from the Christmas break.
“I did not have any trouble settling in; all is running well and we are definitely focused on the task ahead in the season. This friendly match comes as an important component of our pre season preparations and in it the main thing I want us to gain is in terms of fitness.
“These players are just coming back from a long break so we need to have an intensive program that will get them back to their top levels. I feel playing a team in the premier league will be good for them as we look to hit this target,” he told Soka.
In the game, the coach will be fielding the only new signing Baron Oketch but he also has a few players who returned from military duty, including Stephen Ocholla, Francis Ochieng and Evans Amuoka.
He states that apart from checking their fitness levels, it will also be key to note how adaptable they all are to the team in a match situation.
“We have Oketch and the other players returning to the team from duty and these are also important members for us. I want to see how the fit in the system and also how we best we can use their services. Getting that in training is possible but in a game situation it comes out well,” he added.
The team’s quest for glory in the CAF Confederations Cup will commence in North Africa where it will start off with a clash against Libyan team Hilal Benghazi at the preliminary round on the weekend of 10 – 12 February.
