Kenyan Gaming Company SportPesa have stormed into the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) and will be the sponsors of Cape Town City FC for the next four years according to City boss John Comitis.
Gor, AFC Doubts
SportPesa, who not so long ago cast a doubt on whether they will continue with the sponsorship of local giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards due to the heavy betting tax imposed on them by the government, adds Cape Town City to the list that now includes English Premier League sides Southampton, Everton and The Arsenal. Young Africans SC and Simba SC in Tanzania are also beneficiaries of sponsorship from SportPesa.
Mr Comitis is glad to join that elite league of clubs;
''It is exciting times for the club. Sponsors like SportPresa are enablers. They enable clubs like Hull and Everton. They are a betting partner of Southampton and Arsenal, and they originated out of Kenya, sponsoring two major clubs Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards as well as the league,'' he says.
City finished the 2016/17 PSL season in 6th position and will open the 2017/18 campaign with a visit from Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals on Saturday (15h00). Comitis however could not reveal to what figure they would be sponsored.
''This is a first ever in South Africa again, we pride ourselves on doing things for the first time," added Comitis, who only insisted that the deal was lucrative.
