Kenya Premier League (KPL) main sponsors Sportpesa have pumped as sum of Ksh 18.6M for the forthcoming three editions of the KPL Under-20 Championship; the first slated for April 17-30.
According to Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karuri, each of the three editions will get a kitty of Ksh 6.2M, with the showpiece expected to take place in holidays, to give chance for the school going players.
Speaking during the unveiling, Karuri said their main aim was to support grassroots football hence their involvement in the junior tournament and challenged other cooperates to come on board.
“We have always insisted the need to develop grassroots football and hence we cannot forget the youth. We hope to empower teams through this tournament and we hope that other cooperates will join us on the way to support this great initiative,” Karuri remarked.
Karuri said the tournament will have a great impact in the country's soccer where the winner is expected to walk home with a ksh prize of half a million.
"The tournament will have a great impact on the country's soccer. It's a winner take it all showpiece where the champion will walk away with Ksh 500000," Karuri said.
The showpiece is for the junior teams of clubs participating in the KPL top flight.
