Ulinzi Stars FC forward John Mark Makwatta is the November 2016 KPL Fans’ Soka Player of the Month after garnering the lions’ share of votes cast by fans in the week long monthly poll that ran on Soka.co.ke between Wednesday 30 November and Wednesday 7 December.
Makwatta beat four other competitors to bag the award, becoming the second Ulinzi Stars player to win it after goalkeeper James Saruni claimed the first of the year, in February.
Last of the year
To win the award, which incidentally is the last for the year, Makwatta had to see off a stiff challenge from Sofapaka winger Ezekiel Okare, only overtaking the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) debutant on the second last day of the poll.
Makwatta garnered 43.39% of the total votes cast to beat close challenger Okare who managed 38.63%.
Tusker FC defender Shafik Batambuze, who also had a great month came a distant third with 7.87% followed closely by Posta Rangers forward Calvin Odongo who managed 7.43%. Kakamega Homeboyz defender Eric Ambunya got 2.68% of the votes to finish fifth.
In accepting the award, Makwatta thanked fans for voting him as he dedicated it to his team mates and coaches who he says kept pushing him to do well.
“I am happy to be recognized by the fans; they are the ones who watch me in every other game and to have them vote for me means a lot.
“My team mates and coaches have also played a big role. The winner may be myself but behind the scenes there has been a lot of effort. I would like to dedicate this award to them and especially coach (Robert) Matano, who missed the final stages of the season but kept motivating us whenever he got the chance,” he said.
Player of the Year
Makwatta, nominated for the Player of the Year award in the coming KPL Awards gala will be hoping to add that to his list of accolades.
