The long awaited 2018 Kenyan Women Premier League (KWPL) season finally kicked off with nine matches played across different parts of the country. Newly promoted Trans-Nzoia Queens pulled the mother of all upsets with a 6-1 pounding of Mombasa Youth Olympic in a match staged at the Mbaraki Sports club on Sunday 25 February.

Mta Happy opened the scoring in the hosts in the first minute but Maureen Khakasa would restore parity nine minutes later before completing her brace in the 37th minute, while Caren Nangila scored a hat-trick in the 19th, 24th and 49th minutes respectively to ensure they picked maximum points on the road.

Mumias thriller

Elsewhere at the Mumias Sports complex, Vihiga Queens narrowly edged visiting Eldoret Falcons 4-3, in a thrilling encounter played on the same day. Falcons drew the first blood through a Ruth Ingosti strike in the ninth minute before Terry Engesha leveled matters five minutes later and added a second in the 53rd minute.

It was then the Harambee Starlets pair Lilian Adera and Pheobe Oketch netting a goal each in the 60th and 69th minutes, but the Eldoret side kept the push to narrow the gap with Jackline Chesarat and Joyce Chepang’at scoring Falcon’s third and fourth goals in the 75th and 78th minute but it wasn’t enough tp earn them a point as the match ended in the champions’ favor.

Notably Wadadia FC saw off Kisumu side Palos Ladies with a 2-0 win at the Mumias Complex stadium; with goals from twins Miriam Chelagat and Ruth Chebungei in the 22nd and 65th minute earning the hosts maximum points. Thika Queens and Oserian Ladies also registered routine wins over Kakamega Leeds and Soccer Queens; with 0-5 and 1-5 score lines in that order.
