Gor Mahia’s darling Erick Ouma has reveled in being voted the Soka Fans Player of the Month of May. The 19-year-old was awarded a personalized trophy and a cheque of Kshs. 10,000 at the club’s training base, Camp Toyoyo grounds on the afternoon of Wednesday 29 June.
Popularly known as Marcelo, the Gor Mahia rookie has taken the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) by storm and played a key role in defence for the team in the month of May as the champions kept four clean sheets in four matches.
His contribution was not just limited to defending; he posed a big threat as well going forward and provided two assists in the month. His contribution to the team was also spotted by the Harambee Stars coaches and saw him get two caps shortly after but it is his performance in the league that won him the award as voted by fans on Soka.
“I am grateful to the Gor fraternity for their kind votes. It’s a message that I should continue working hard to achieve more. With more effort that will be achieved, I also thank my teammates for their endless support both on and off the pitch not foregtiing the technical bench,” he said during the awarding.
Ouma beat his other nominees, picking the larger percentage, 59.2% with Bandari FC’s Dan Sserunkuma coming second on 37.7%. Ulinzi Stars’ John Makwatta, Fredrick Onyango of SoNy Sugar and Tusker FC’s Ekaliani Ndolo came third, fourth and fifth on 1.89%, 0.63% and 0.55% in that order.
In total, the former Kakamega High student has made 16 appearances in all competitions providing four assist.
Marcelo becomes the fourth player to win the award in 2016 after Jacques Tuyisenge (April), Kepha Aswani (March) and James Saruni (February). Jacob Keli, Bernard Mang’oli, Meddie Kagere, Victor Abondo, Michael Olunga and Mungai Kiongera are the previous winners of the accolade.
