Former Liverpool forward, Harry Kewell, now the Crawley Town manager singled Kenyan defender Josh Lelan Kipkemboi and his mate Josh Yorwerth for praise after picking the first three points at home in the 2 – 0 win over Yeovil in a League 2 clash at Chekatrade Stadium on Saturday 2 September.
Lelan, capped once for Kenya, and Yorwerth partnered in central defence, and went on to play the entire 90 minutes as Crawley registered their second win of the season, which saw the side rise from the relegation region to 16th on the log with six points.
A win and a clean sheet marked a perfect outing for Kewell, as Jordan Roberts netted in the 12th and 51st minutes. Speaking to Crawley Observer the coach acknowledged the defensive duo was up to task, though he reserved praise for the opponents as well.
“We came out and played the first 15/25 minutes with a goal. We felt comfortable. They were trying to isolate us at the back and Josh Yorwerth and Josh Lelan were excellent today. Let’s not take it away from them, they (Yeovil) did have a good chance in the opening minutes and they missed the target - unfortunate for them but great for us,” Kewell admitted.
Yeovil, who have also won twice in the season’s five matches, dropped down to 18th place with six points.
Ayub Timbe - China
Meanwhile, in China, another Kenyan international Ayub Timbe featured on Sunday 3 September as his second tier side Beijing Renhe kept promotion dreams alive with a 2 – 0 win away to league leaders Dalian Yifang at the Dalian Sports Center.
Brazilian midfielder Ivo and Wan Houliang netted the goals in the 57th and 81st minutes to see second placed Renhe move to 50 points and in the process close the gap on Yifang to just two points after 24 matches.
McDonald Mariga - Spain
In Spain, former Kenyan international McDonald Mariga was missing in the team as his second tier side Real Oviedo pocketed the first win of the season in slamming Reus Deportiu 3 – 0.
Jose Verdu Nicolas was the day’s star as his two goals, in the 27th and 48th minute, added to substitute David Rocha’s stike in the 88th minute to see Oviedo rise to eighth on four points as Deportiu remained 18th with two points from three matches.
David Kingatua - Sweden
In the Swedish third tier, former City Stars, Thika United and Bandari midfielder David Kingatua made a late entry as his team Oskarshamns AIK fell 1 - 2 away to Assyriska BK. Berahman Gholamreza netted the opener for the hosts in the 17th minute then Daniel Neves put it beyond doubt with a second striker in the 25th minute. Peiman Eliassi pulled one back in the 58th minute but it was not enough.
Kingatua was introduced in the 90th minute in place of Emil Dolk.
