Olunga bags debut brace for new club Girona

Kenyan international Michael Olunga had the perfect start to his stint in Spain as he netted a brace on his debut helping La Liga side, Girona FC whitewash Ripoll FC 8-0 in a charity match played on Municipal field of Ripoll in honor of the Barcelona attack that occurred on August 18 2017.

The match was a David vs Goliath duel and it didn’t take long for Girona to stamp their authority as in the 10th minute they took the lead through Carles Planas. Girona doubled their lead in the 27th minute through Nigerian Olarenwaju Kayode who is on loan from Premier League club Manchester City. At the stroke of half time Girona sealed the tie by adding a third goal through Portu.

New recruit Olunga who is on loan from Chinese club Guizhou Zhicheng was given his first taste of Spanish football after the half time break. 

The second half was no different from the first half as in the 61st minute Aday Benitez made it 4-0. The former Tusker and Gor Mahia player had his moment of brilliance as he struck a brace in just two minutes with goals coming in the 71st and 72nd minute. Colombians Marlos Moreno and Johan Mojica netted a goal each to ensure the tie ended 8-0 in favour of Girona.

Girona FC is co-owned by The City Football Group who also own Manchester City, New York City, Melbourne City, Yokohama F. Marinos and Atletico Torque in Uruguay. 

Pep Guardiola’s brother Pere Guardiola who is an agent to Luis Suarez and Andreas Iniesta also owns 44% of the shares at the club. Girona currently sits at a comfortable sixth position in the La Liga Standings having beaten Malaga and drawn with 2014 La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid.
