Harambee Stars forward Michael Olunga scored his third goal in two games as Djurgardens IF settled to a two-all draw against visiting Elfsborg in a Swedish top tier match played on Sunday 14 August at Tele2 Arena from 6.30pm EAT.
The visitors broke the deadlock on the 25th minute through 24-year-old Per Frick but the lead did not last long as Olunga equalized four minutes later. Viktor Prodell restored Elfsborg’s lead on the 49th minute but Magnus Eriksson leveled matters on the 56th minute for a 2 – 2 stalemate at full time.
Defensive mix up
Olunga, a former Tusker FC, Thika United and Gor Mahia hit-man, all on loan from Liberty Professionals, displayed good positional play to receive the through ball before sending a beautiful left-footed volley past Elfsborg shot-stopper Sturh-Ellegaard as the first half ended in a one-all draw.
On resumption, Prodell fired in a header past Djurgardens goalkeeper Kenneth Hoie who had come off his line with Jesper Karlstrom unable to stop a cross from the middle of the park. On the 56th minute, Eriksson capitalized on a defensive mix up to slot home Djurgarden’s second.
The 2015 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) MVP almost claimed a brace on the 75th minute but saw his header off a Mathieu Ranegie go overboard as the hosts pushed on to claim all the points in vain.
“A little bit disappointed because we did a lot to win the game. We conceded two easy goals and it’s something we are going to work on – defending crosses. Lots of positives to pick in the match going forward with the right attitude all will be okay," Djurgardens' tactician Mark Dempsey said in a post-match interview.
A draw takes Dempsey’s side to 19 points, similar to 13th placed Helsingborg from 18 games. They next visit Ostersunds FK in their round 19 clash on Saturday 20 August.
