Kenyan international Johanna Omollo featured for the opening 70 minutes as his Belgian second tier side Cercle Brugge lost 0 – 1 in the first leg of their promotion playoff clash against Beerschot – Wilrijk on Sunday 4 March.

Hosts Beerschot had a man sent off in the game but it was the Kenyan international who went to the referee’s book first, with a third minute booking and Brugge will be hoping to overturn the deficit in the second leg on Saturday 10 March.

Absent in Spain

In the Spanish La Liga, Michael Olunga was a notable absentee in the Girona team that beat Villarreal 2 – 0 courtesy of goals from Christian Stuani, in the 16th minute and Anthony Lozano in the 80th minute, after replacing Stuani. The win saw seventh placed Girona move to within a point of sixth placed Villarreal on the standings, having picked 40 points from 27 matches.

In the second tier, McDonald Mariga was also absent as Real Oviedo played to a barren draw with Barcelona B, a result that saw Oviedo stay sixth on the log and Barcelona B 16th. Oviedo is within reach of promotion to La Liga as the fourth to sixth placed teams go into a play off to determine one team that gets to the top flight.

Wanyama unused

In England, Mariga’s brother, Victor Wanyama was an unused sub as his Tottenham Hotspur side beat Huddersfield Town 2 – 0 at Wembley, courtesy of goals from Heung Min Son and down in League Two, there was no action for Crawley Town’s Josh Lelan as their match against Wycombe Wanderers was postponed.

In the South African top flight, Kenyan defender Brian Mandela was introduced to the game in the 90th minute as replacement for Siphesihle Ndlovu as his team, Maritzburg United played to a barren draw with SuperSport United in Pretoria.

In the same league, there was once again no appearance in the team for Kenyan midfielder Ali Abondo as his team Bloemfontein Celtic beat Ajax Cape Town 1 – 0 and another Kenyan, Masud Juma was also missing in action as his team Cape Town City returned to winning ways with a 2 – 0 victory over Chippa United.
