Relegation danger for Kenyan quartet abroad

It was not the best of Sundays on 29 October as a list of Kenyan players abroad suffered losses, while one was at the end of a dangerous draw.

In Spain, McDonald Mariga’s Real Oviedo fell on the road and it was the same for Erick Marcelo Ouma, Amos Nondi and John Macharia’s Kolkheti Poti in Georgia.

In Sweden, Eric Johanna’s Vasalund let slip a 3-1 cushion in their penultimate season game, while also on the road, to end up drawing 3-3, a result that leaves them ever so close to relegation to the Swedish fourth tier next season.

It was however not all gloom and doom for Kenyans out there as Michael Olunga’s Girona picked a historic 2-1 win over a fading Real Madrid as Ismael Athuman’s Fuenlabrada continued their impressive run in the Spanish third tier.

Alwyn Tera’s Saburtalo was also on the winning path as well as Ayub Timbe’s Beijing Renhe – already promoted to the top tier, as they closed the Chinese second tier with a 2-1 home win over Hangzhou.

Kenya’s lead striker Olunga missed the party when Girona FC shocked Real Madrid 2-1 at the Municipal de Montilivi Stadium on Sunday evening.

Isco put the Catalan giants ahead in the 12th minute after capitalizing on a rebound but two goals in four minutes in the second half, the first by Stuani Curbelo in the 54th minute and follow-up by Cristian Portugués aka Portu delivered a second straight league win for Girona.

The win sends Girona up three places, from 15th to 12th and on 12 points, is within eight points of Real Madrid who stagnated at third spot.

In the second tier Mariga ticked 70 minutes as Real Oviedo went down 2-0 to Alorcon in a week 12 clash at the Santo Domingo.

Oviedo slump

Goals by Álvaro Giménez and Laure in the 41st and 60th minutes that got no replies meant Oviedo would not build on back to back identical 2-0 wins over Langreao and Cordoba from the last two rounds.

After the loss, and with 14 points, Oviedo slumps from 13th to 15th place as Alorcon rises from 17th to 13th in the 22-team league with 15 points.

In Group 1 of the third tier (Segunda B), Athuman’s Fuenlabrada stretched their unbeaten run to ten games after seeing off Cerceda 1-0 at the Fernando Torres Stadium. The midfielder was however missing from the match day squad.

A sixth minute goal by Alvaro Portilla was the difference in the game, and the three points it brought about sent promotion chasing Fuenlabrada up second from third spot. The team is on 26 points same as Deportivo la Coruna II.

At the Beijing Fengtai Stadium (Beijing), Beijing Renhe picked a 2-1 win over Hanghzou on Saturday to consolidate second spot in the 16-team second tier league.

Beijing played once again played without Ayub Masika who in the recent past suffered and ankle injury that will keep him out of action for almost three months.

The win came at the end of a 2-0 shock loss to Nei Mongol Zhongyou in the penultimate round of games last weekend. The latest win sees the team end the season with 64 points from 30 games, two behind winners Dalian Yifang who ended the season with an unforeseen 1-0 home loss to relegated Baoding Yingli Yitong.

In Sweden, Eric Johanna's Vasalund failed to replicate their performance in the previous game, a 6 - 2 win over Lulea, picking just a point in the 3 - 3 draw with league leaders Brega. Vasalund was in cruise control with a 2 - 0 lead in the 40th minute after Steven Parvey and Yusuf Saleh's goals but Linus Zetterstrom halved the deficit in the 61st minute. That would last for only four minutes as in the 65th, Saleh netted his second of the day to restore the two - goal cushion.

That was however wiped away by Zetterstrom's second of the day in the 77th minute and Anton Lundin's strike in the fourth minute of added time sunk Vasalund hearts. 12th placed Vasalund now have one game to save their season, and their fate is no longer in their hands as 11th placed Sollentuna need just a draw to secure survival.

In the same league but on the Southern side, David Kingatua's side Oskarsharmns AIK was also only the losing end, falling 1 - 2 to Mjallby courtesy of goals from Oskar Sverrison and Mirza Halvadzic in the 36th and 79th minutes. Filip Jagerbrink scored Oskarsharmns' consolation.

Georgia based duo of Amos Nondi and John Macharia featured for the entire 90 minutes as Poti suffered yet another heartbreak in a 0 - 1 loss to Lokomotiv Tbilisi. Erick Macerlo Ouma who is also attached to the team was missing in action as he is still out injured.

Alwyn Tera, another Kenyan, was withdrawn in the latter stages of his team's 2 - 0 win over Samtredia on Saturday. Giorgi Karaishvili netted both goals in the 28th and 65th minutes to keep Saburtalo fourth on the log with 53 points, 15 behind leaders Dinamo Tbilisi.
